We have been dreaming about the Ski Season for months and there it comes. Yet on the first day, we were frazzled and our energy was low. This trip with such high expectations comes at the end of a long school term, winter and a very long family car journey, which had us jump through many hoops: preparing the ski gear, packing, preparing the food for the transit and the week, getting out of school on time, braving the traffic, the tunnel, crossing France, sleeping over then  crossing France again to get to the ski shop before it closes so we can get equipped before the next morning.

Then there we are, and that first day, some pernicious thoughts were getting into my head such as : is that all it is? going up and going down again, and over and over?

Then the snow, the sun and the fun came, the fog literally lifted off my brain and we could all reconnect with nature, the beauty of the scenery, the fresh air, the fun from riding the lifts, designing your route and coming down again, deciding when and where to have lunch and have fun.

On reflection, I learnt many lessons on this trip

  • fun is contagious, but also if one person does not have fun, it contaminates others too
  • energy is everything to mindset, we should not confuse low energy and low moral
  • adaptability:mentally, it takes time to transition from the school term in uk to the slopes in France
  • connecting to self, joy and others demands to let go, reset and appreciate the moment
  • shaking the routine: upon coming back, I felt restored, and that my horizons had expanded

Don’t take me wrong, I know we are creatures of habits and thrive in our routines and discipline, however it does need shaking up every so often or it feels like our world becomes smaller and smaller and we are less and less able to take a dearing challenge, cease an adventure, or choose the fun option.

Taking time off to slow down, accept change and connect to the present moment was so helpful in bringing fresh perspective over for when you get back to your routine 🙂
