Prana and Apana are the main Energy Flows that you may have encountered in your Yoga practice, often used as breath visualisations in poses. There are in fact dozens of energy flows detailed by the ancient Yogis however the 5 main otherwise called the 5 Vayus follow the main directions of movement i.e. Downward, Inward, Upwards and Outward.

Prana also called Life-Force is an Inward and Upward energy that circulates throughout the body to bring vitality to all cells and organs. It represents the action of drawing in air, energy, liquid, food, and experiences into the body and mind; and is associated with our Heart energy centre and the Air element. Because the drawing in of thoughts and events can be disturbed by our sensory experiences, Prana is best stimulated by meditations focusing on a purifying light drawing upwards from the chest up into the centre of the Brain behind the eye brows.

Take 3 quietening breaths with the eyes closed. Visualise the centre of the chest and imagine drawing in the gift of life force as you Inhale, then Exhale as you direct the breath up towards the centre of the brain, visualisation a calming and restful white light. Continue for a few cycle of breaths then direct the exhale energy towards the whole body as you imagine it circulating life force throughout. Enjoy the vitality.
