Amish Jha is a neuroscientist quoted by Jon Kabat Zinn in his book ‘The Healing Power of Mindfulness’ for her research and writing about the many scientific meditation experiments that have taken place in the last 10 years to help study the brain, in particular the various Networks of the brain.

She has conducted research on the effects of mindfulness training on attention, working memory, and stress resilience and produced books, articles and Ted Talk about Mindfulness. In her article titled: “The Mindfulness of Breathing: Cultivating Attention”, neuroscientist Amishi Jha shares insights into the practice of mindfulness and its profound effects on attention and well-being. She emphasizes the importance of cultivating present-moment awareness, especially in today’s fast-paced world.

Jha introduces a simple yet powerful mindfulness exercise focusing on the breath. She guides readers through the practice, encouraging them to anchor their attention to the sensations of breathing, such as the rise and fall of the chest or the feeling of air passing through the nostrils.

By directing attention to the breath, individuals can train their minds to become more focused, resilient, and present. Jha explains how mindfulness practices like this one can reshape the brain, fostering neural plasticity and enhancing cognitive functions such as attention and working memory.

Moreover, Jha discusses the scientific research supporting the benefits of mindfulness, citing studies that demonstrate its efficacy in reducing stress, improving emotional regulation, and enhancing overall well-being.

Jha encourages readers to incorporate mindfulness into their daily lives, emphasizing that even brief moments of mindful awareness can have profound effects on mental clarity and resilience. Through the simple yet profound practice of mindfulness of breathing, individuals can cultivate a greater sense of calm, clarity, and presence in their lives.
