Keep Fit at the Beach

We love our long French holidays with the family in the summer. It is great  that the Beach is so close.  And this year, with the children being a bit older, we have been able to really make the most of it.

In previous years we have been tempted to adopt the babies daily routines, that is sleep, eat, sleep and then eat some more… a great anti stress regime however not so great to keep you fit in the holidays.

Building Sand Castles to Keep Fit at the Beach

Now the beach has taken a new spin for us this summer, the great sand castle building year, first of many I am sure.  You can be very technical about it, and look up on-line how to build a sand castle…

yes some of us actually did this, not telling you which half… or simply look around and copy the neighbours.

Lots of things to consider.. how close you are to the water, whether the tide is coming up or going down, how much shells and pebbles are around to decorate etc..

Yoga Postures to Keep Fit at the Beach

As a conscious Yogini for me it was all about alignment.. and I am not talking about the walls of the sand castle…. but rather the postures namely

– The Cat: this posture will allow digging sand and picking shells on the shore.

Make sure you keep your tummy in..

– Malasana: a squatting posture keeping the tailbone down, the feet in direction of the knees and the chest open: in addition to the above  digging and picking, you can also build the sand castle: fill the bucket, tap and turn over.. then do it many times over  because the little one is destroying it as soon as it appears.

– Alternate Prasarita Padottanasana (wide leg forward bend) with a horse stance squat and a side lunge for a more dynamic practice which will work your legs and buttocks while you accelerate the digging of sand

– Hero pose, Virasana: will give you a bit of well needed rest , keeping the length in the spine while resting the pelvis in neutral on the heels

Now add a bit of swimming, walking and of course morning Sun Salutations and you have managed to just keep fit to ensure a healthy start in September.
